Confession: I am a Swifty. That is, a Taylor Swift fan.
You may have seen that Taylor was recently in Detroit for her current tour and ticket prices were up to $1,300 (per person!).
My non-fan friends could not believe anyone would pay that much money to go to one of her concerts and it got me thinking, why do I love her so much?
To clarify, I didn’t attend her concert, but I think Taylor has amassed such a following because she has developed trusting relationships with millions of people that she has never even met.
How has she accomplished this? Well…
1. She makes you feel seen and heard. Even if you’re not a fan of her music, I am confident that you will find lyrics from her music that resonate with you. Taylor has a way of capturing the exact way you are feeling. At her concerts, she is regularly on stage for more than 3 hours, playing over 40 songs complete with costume and scenery changes just to make sure you feel like you really were a part of something special.
2. She doesn’t hide her mistakes. She is genuine. You can see exactly how she handles mistakes even when she is performing in front of a stadium full of people on YouTube. She owns them and then moves forward.
3. She is candid. Taylor is never mean or hurtful, and at the same time she’s always real and honest.
“In real life, saying the right thing at the right moment is beyond crucial. So crucial, in fact, that most of us start to hesitate, for fear of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. But lately what I’ve begun to fear more than that is letting the moment pass without saying anything. I think most of us fear reaching the end of our life and looking back, regretting the moments we didn’t speak up. When we didn’t say “I love you.” When we should’ve said, “I’m Sorry.” When we didn’t stand up for ourselves or someone who needed help.” – Taylor Swift
Now, listen – I’m not trying to perform on stage in a bodysuit in front of 75,000 people.
But I am interested in creating trusting relationships with people. Taylor Swift seems to have figured out how to do just that!
How might you try to be a little more like Taylor this week?
Just some food for thought.
