From my days in Latin class in high school, I’ve had a picture in my mind of what it looked like and stories about the things that happened there. When I saw the real thing recently, I was shocked at the complexity of the structure and even more stunned to learn that in its thousands of years of existence, its purpose and identity has morphed and changed over and over, including being used as a private residence and farm for a few centuries. Who knew?
It reminded me of how many things in my catalog of “knowledge” I feel certain about, but only actually see a tiny piece of.
